Mastercard and bunq launch cards with True Name feature in Germany

Tuesday 18 May 2021 14:32 CET | News

Mastercard and mobile banking app bunq have announced launching a payment card with the True Name feature in Germany for International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

People from the transgender and non-binary community can use this feature to enter their self-chosen names on a payment card. After the launch in the USA in 2019, bunq is now the first card issuer to offer the True Name feature in Germany and 29 other European countries. Bunq Mastercard credit and debit card holders can apply for the card with immediate effect.

Mastercard developed the True Name feature, since the official name changing process is very lengthy and bureaucratic. According to a Mastercard Europe representative, the company is committed to ensuring everyone has access to financial products that reflect their true identity, and hope other card issuers will follow.
