Bulgaria: Payment via cards up by 33% in 2011 – study

In 2011, payments made via credit or debit cards in Bulgaria have increased by 33 percent, as compared to 2010. Additionally, the number of cards issued has also grown by 14 percent, VISA has recently unveiled.

During the period under review, Bulgarian banks have not changed too much the value of fees collected from citizens, the media outlet Monitor daily has mentioned. Yet, revenues from fees have increased. According to research by the Bulgarian National Bank, in 2011 banks in Bulgaria have collected EUR 447.327 million (BGN 874.9 million) from fees and commissions, up by 3.6 percent since 2010.

The same data has also indicated that lending in Bulgaria has gone up by 4 percent in 2011.
