The new specification, MULTOS 4.2, supports default application selection and contact or contactless interfaces on dual interface smart chips. Furthermore, it improves the performance of creating RSA key pairs and adds an exchange data function for implementations with more than one operating system on the same chip, such as the Philips/Keycorp Pro-X MULTOS/MiFare product. In addition, MULTOS also announced a new open platform for EMV smart cards (see separate press release) to broaden the appeal of the operating system to more cost sensitive implementations. The platform, which will be available by the end of 2003, appeals to financial organisations issuing their first EMV cards, and will enable these issuers to upgrade their cards to full PKI-based MULTOS smart cards as they wish.
