How payment orchestration became essential for global merchants

Wesley Jones from Praxis Tech shares insights on how businesses leverage payment orchestration platforms to simplify PSP integrations, enhance resilience, combat fraud, and enable seamless checkouts.

Connecting to a payment orchestration platform to access global processors, payment methods, and modern checkout interfaces has never been more vital. When I look back on the past two decades of talking with merchants, it’s clear there’s one challenge that never stops surfacing: payment friction when consolidating global operations.

Whether they’re an iGaming provider pushing into new territories or an online trading platform accepting deposits from customers all over the world, the challenges remain consistent - slow PSP integrations, limited local payment method support, and a reliance on a single processor that leaves them vulnerable to outages and declining approval rates.

With customer brand loyalty increasingly fragile, any friction at checkout can repel clients and hurt conversion rates. It’s not just about losing a single sale due to a decline or an unsupported currency or method; it’s the ripple effect of eroded credibility, poor brand perception, and missed opportunities. By contrast, when a purchase goes through seamlessly, it instantly boosts trust. This means repeat business, more brand advocacy, and ultimately more revenue.

Using orchestration to add PSPs and new payment methods quickly

For those new to the concept, payment orchestration centralises how merchants integrate, manage, and track their PSPs. Instead of creating separate integrations for every processor or method, businesses plug into a single, unified platform that collects transaction data, routes payments to different PSPs based on pre-set rules, conducts fraud checks, updates CRMs, and handles card payment data storage compliance on the merchant’s behalf.

From my 18 years in payments, the value of orchestration is clear in how it comprehensively enhances payment operations, eliminates the friction of months-long onboarding cycles, and is the only platform approach that gives businesses the agility and resilience to grow. This conviction comes from firsthand experience working with both SMEs and large enterprises, where faster infrastructure setup and optimisation often prove the key differentiators for scaling across borders.

Praxis Tech’s agnostic take on orchestration

We built our platform to be PSP-agnostic from day one, knowing merchants want maximum control over their payment journey. While we don’t favour any one PSP over the other, our goal has always been to offer a broad selection of the most popular, industry-relevant processors ready for immediate use, while allowing merchants to integrate new providers through our platform as their needs evolve.

In my conversations with merchants across various industries, one of the biggest advantages they cite is the freedom to pick and choose payment partners that align with their commercial goals, regional strategy, and risk appetite. For those using orchestration, the days of being locked into a single solution and running the risk of downtime or restrictive approval flows are quickly fading.

Beyond connectivity - compliance, risk, recovery, and insights

Of course, payment orchestration goes beyond just connectivity to multiple Payment Service Providers. To truly remove friction, merchants need an end-to-end framework that addresses every link in the payment chain. This includes:

  • Card Data Tokenisation: merchants connected to Praxis can leverage our PCI DSS 4.0 certification to securely store their customers’ card information without facing additional compliance hurdles. Combined with our ISO 27001 certification, merchants can be assured of our information management security systems.

  • Built-in Risk & Fraud Management: high-volume merchants face escalating threats from fraud and chargebacks, especially when targeting new or high-risk markets. Praxis can proactively screen transactions through Visa’s leading anti-fraud solution, Cybersource, to catch fraud before it strikes. Merchants can also set their own velocity check limits, manage blocklists, and add extra verification steps based on geo-filters.

  • Recovery & Smart Routing: when a payment is declined, Praxis can instantly reroute the same transaction to secondary processors, without forcing users to re-verify or re-enter details. Similar solutions apply if deposits fail due to insufficient funds or if a payment card is identified to support Open Banking methods, ensuring merchants capture conversions that might otherwise be lost.

  • Real-time Analytics & Reporting: through our unified dashboard, payment managers can quickly spot underperforming PSPs, monitor approval rates, and export transaction reports for reconciliation in a fraction of the time once required.

These capabilities combine to power a merchant’s entire payment ecosystem. Instead of reviewing multiple PSP dashboards, managing complex card-storage regulations, or manually reviewing high-value transactions for fraud, teams can concentrate on scaling their core business and delivering better user experiences.

The future of payments is orchestrated

Looking ahead, as merchants continue to expand into globalised markets, confront more sophisticated fraud tactics, and adopt support for new digital wallets and local payment methods, it’s clear there’s no returning to the days of fragmented, cobbled-together integrations.

By centralising connectivity, optimising routing, and monitoring performance through one unified platform, merchants can more confidently scale their operations, reduce friction at checkout, and protect their revenue streams across diverse regions.
