Western Union has introduced WhatsApp Business as a new service channel for its customers in Peru, enabling them to send money globally efficiently.
Through this tool, users can send money to over 200 countries and territories, as well as buy or sell dollars, all from their cell phone.
For Western Union Peru, WhatsApp represents a way of approaching its customers, providing them with an optimal and reliable experience. This initiative enables users to conduct transactions from anywhere while maintaining direct contact with a company representative.
Potential benefits for users
- Lower fees and improved exchange rates when users send money via WhatsApp;
- Bank accounts and digital wallets – in addition to Western Union’s services, customers can also send money directly to bank accounts or digital wallets;
- No waiting in line, as users can send money entirely online and pay through bank transfer;
- Buy dollars, enabling customers to buy or sell dollars through the current exchange service;
- Personalised service allows users to contact agents from Western Union.
Regarding how it works, the customer needs to send a message to the WhatsApp number +511 5100145, specify the operation they want to perform, and fill out a form with the required information. If the customer meets the company's requirements, the service is completed within minutes. Additionally, according to the company, users can send money fee-free to multiple Latin American countries, including Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela, for a limited time.
Western Union's global expansion
Besides the recent options launched in Peru, in August 2025, Western Union agreed to acquire Intermex through an all-cash deal at USD 16.00 per IMXI share, totalling an equity and enterprise value of approximately USD 500 million. The acquisition strengthened Western Union’s retail offering in the US, expanded market coverage in high-potential geographies, and was expected to accelerate digital new customer acquisition. Intermex’s market knowledge, optimal agent relationships, and operational expertise further positioned Western Union to capture growth in the Americas.
