GoTyme Bank has launched Apple Pay in the Philippines through Paymentology's issuer processing platform.
The launch was supported by Paymentology, a global issuer processor that provides GoTyme's card processing infrastructure. The service is available to GoTyme's customer base of 10 million account holders, who can now add their GoTyme debit card to Apple Wallet and use it for contactless payments in stores, within apps, and online wherever Apple Pay is accepted.
According to the official press release, Apple Pay does not store card numbers on the device or share them with merchants at the point of transaction. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is generated and stored securely on the device. Each transaction is authenticated through Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, a process intended to reduce exposure of card data during in-store, in-app, and online payments.
Digital payments growth in the Philippines
The launch coincides with a broader shift in the Philippine payments market. According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), digital payments now account for more than half of all retail payment transactions in the country, reflecting increased use of mobile-first banking and contactless payment methods. At the same time, rising smartphone penetration has accompanied this trend, supporting demand for digital wallets and tokenised payment options. Against this backdrop, the ability to offer mobile payment services such as Apple Pay is becoming a factor that banks and fintechs consider when developing their digital payment offerings.
Nate Clark, President and CEO at GoTyme Bank, said the addition of Apple Pay gives customers a way to pay wherever they shop while continuing to earn rewards points on transactions, describing it as a further step in the bank's approach to everyday banking.
Furthermore, Minh-Ha Truong, Head of Growth, APAC at Paymentology, said the launch reflects how cloud-native issuer processing allows digital banks to introduce new payment capabilities, and noted the companies' continued partnership in the Philippine market.
Strategic implications
Paymentology has worked with GoTyme on payment infrastructure since the bank's establishment, and the Apple Pay launch represents a further stage in that relationship. For GoTyme, the addition of Apple Pay adds a mobile payment option to its existing debit card and rewards offering. For Paymentology, the launch serves as an example of its cloud-native issuer processing platform being used to support the rollout of new payment methods for a digital bank client in Southeast Asia. Neither company has disclosed further plans for additional markets or payment schemes at this stage.
