The partnership seeks to introduce a fully digital payment process for TOMRA’s reverse vending machines, allowing consumers to exchange reusable materials for a monetary reward. Thus, Shift4, a global company that provides integrated payments and commerce technology, will act as the acquirer and Point-of-Sale (POS) gateway provider for TOMRA.
According to the official press release, the digitalisation of the recycling system in Europe is essential because the current system involves several steps and the use of paper coupons that must be redeemed for cash at kiosks. This process is inconvenient for consumers who expect flexible and convenient payment options, and it also contributes to paper waste.
Therefore, the alliance between TOMRA and Shift4 aims to redefine the reuse experience and to reshape the traditional processes, offering accessibility to consumers together with environmentally conscious practices. Moreover, it supports the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) regulation in reducing CO2 emissions. With over 55 billion takeaway packages used annually in Europe, embracing the circular economy by accelerating global reuse efforts is crucial to reducing waste. This partnership will also help to reduce paper waste in all of Europe and transform the way consumers engage with reusable materials.
US-based Shift4 is a company that provides complex payment ecosystems across the world, in various industries. The partnership with TOMRA came after Shift4 acquired Finaro in October 2023 to expand in Europe and improve ecommerce capabilities. Additionally, the acquisition expanded the company’s cross-border ecommerce capabilities, allowing it to deliver a unified global payments platform for merchants and partners.
Earlier, in September, Shift4 partnered with Give Lively to offer fundraising services to non-profit organisations. This integration was focused on the process of expanding donation processing capabilities and offerings, as well as including stock and top cryptocurrencies, which will be provided by the Giving Block.
