Square introduces Orders platform

Thursday 10 October 2024 10:42 CET | News

US-based payments platform Square has announced the launch of its Orders platform, a service that offers expanded commerce features to sellers across verticals in the region.

Throughout the third quarter of 2024, Square has been focusing its efforts on completing a substantial infrastructure shift, with the company developing a commerce platform that delivers both payments and ordering features. In addition to optimising how the company builds products, the newly launched platform is set to deliver expanded commerce capabilities, including Pre-Auth and Bar Tabs, to sellers, regardless of size, across verticals in the US.

Checkout flexibility for sellers

When commenting on the announcement, representatives from Square underlined that the Orders platform is set to allow their company to offer a more flexible checkout experience to sellers, whether their customers want to order ahead, open a bar tab, or set up a subscription. Through the new tool, Square aims to enable sellers utilising its services to deliver more options and scale sales across their businesses.

Moreover, Square’s order-based infrastructure was developed to support sellers in expanding their businesses by allowing them to complete a sale anywhere and anyhow, in turn allowing them to run an efficient operation that meets customers’ demands, needs, and preferences and minimises time for companies. At the time of the announcement, the platform was in general availability, with Square expecting this move to accelerate product velocity onwards.

Square’s launch of Tap-to-Pay on iPhone in Canada

The launch of the Orders platform follows Square’s introduction of Tap-to-Pay on iPhone in Canada in May 2024, when the company allowed its sellers to have access to the technology in the country. The solution was set to be available within the Square Point of Sale, Square for Retail, and Square Appointments iOS app. By launching Tap-to-Pay on iPhone in the region, Square intended to simplify how sellers and established businesses conduct in-person commerce, with any of the company’s merchants with a compatible device being able to accept contactless payments by opening one of the apps, adding the transaction, and then presenting their iPhone to the buyer.
