US and UK based NALA customers can access the Google Pay feature on the NALA app, which enables pay-out to more than 300 banks and 20 mobile money operators in Africa, the receival of Google Pay-enabled remittances being possible in five African countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Ghana.
The Google Pay integration comes seven months after the company’s US operations launch, and with it, NALA joins Flutterwave, the African fintech unicorn, as a payment enabler through Google Pay.
When speaking about the implementation, NALA officials have stated for TechCabal that the company’s mission is to increase Africans’ global economic opportunities, the Google Pay enablement marking a step forward in their goal of connecting more global payment options in Africa, this reach allowing NALA to work towards building a stronger financial infrastructure for Africans worldwide.
This announcement marks a three-week streak of product improvement news from the remittance facilitator company, who is cementing itself as the first Tanzanian startup enabler of a global payment service, and first African one to roll out Google Pay for all its customers.
Having added Google Pay, NALA expands its pay-out options for customers in the diaspora, offering them the option of choosing either of the available global payment services, including Apple Pay, which was implemented earlier in October 2022, to transfer money to Africa in a quick manner.
Combined, Google Pay and Apple Pay have approximately 70 million users in the US alone, making them the preferred payment option in the country, a trend that is also mirrored in the UK payments scene. With NALA’s target users being the African diaspora in the UK and the US, the company is looking at existing payment behaviours of its users to develop its product.
Google Pay helps provide safe, easy, contactless payments to its users through means of near-field communication (NFC) technology for retailers’ transfers facilitation in physical stores. Additionally, users are enabled to save their card details in their Google Wallet, and through the service, they can carry out online or in-app payments. As of now, Google Pay is available across 42 countries to Android phones, tablets, or smartwatches users.
