TikTok starts testing support for paid subscriptions

Monday 24 January 2022 10:30 CET | News

China-based social media platform TikTok has announced it started testing support for paid subscriptions.

The short-form video app is currently looking into the option for creators to charge subscriptions for their content, but the new feature is part of a limited test and will not be available broadly anytime soon.

As there were no other details shared about how the new implementation will affect audience-targeted content on the platform, it is possible that the subscription will apply to additional content exclusively available to paid users, as opposed to being applied to the entire content on a user’s profile.

The news comes soon after Facebook-owned Instagram social media platform launched a similar subscription programme in the US that is in early testing on a small group of content creators who can provide followers paid access to exclusive Instagram Live stories and videos. With Twitter previously launching a similar feature in September 2021, the trend of paid subscriptions for social media content may stick in 2022.
