Monday 28 February 2022 11:49 CET | News

LATAM ecommerce platform Mercado Libre has announced it will invest USD 1.47 billion in its Mexico operation, increasing the funding by a third compared to the 2021 investment.

According to the company, the operation in Mexico had the highest revenue in Q4 2021, up by 33% in sales volume. So far, Mercado Libre has invested USD 2.1 billion in Mexico in the past five years.

The new capital infusion will be used to innovate technology, boost logistic operations, as well as develop other categories in the online market, including supermarkets and apparel.

The director of Mercado Libre in Mexico has mentioned that the ecommerce platform expects a migration of consumers towards digital commerce, which offers more alternatives and lower prices by comparison to in-store locations. Boosted by the current pandemic, the Mexican ecommerce market will continue its increase in volume sales in the next years, as many customers ditch cash payments for digital alternatives.
