The Germany-based supermarket Edeka's North Bavaria-Saxony-Thuringia group has launched an individual self-checkout (SCO) solution for its independent merchants.
So far, around 190 SCO terminals have been set up in various constellations in their 700 stores. Usually between 15 and 20% of sales are processed there, with over 40% at the peak. According to an Edeka representative, these trends demonstrate the willingness of customers to use modern checkout options.
The company aimed to offer self-employed businesspeople a self-checkout based on POS hardware and integrated as plug & play. The system is also suitable for mass roll-out and for all types of stores within the Edeka group. In its basic version the SCO terminal is limited to a scanner, non-cash payment module, receipt printer, and coupon unit, but is easily expandable with a cash module and scales. Larger rollouts of the express checkouts are planned for 2021.
