Tuesday 25 January 2022 11:22 CET | Editor: Irina Ionescu | Voice of the industry

Going through our third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, several events in the payments industry are reopening their doors for offline meetings, so let’s take a look at the most important ones so far.

MPE 2022 (Berlin, 5-7 July)

The Merchant Payments Ecosystem event will reunite in Berlin for its anticipated 2022 edition. Participants can expect three days of networking opportunities, interactive deep-knowledge workshops, and key speakers in merchant and payments-related fields.

The hottest topics of the industry were gathered for the 2022 edition and include, among others:

  • Open Banking – Open Finance as the next chapter of open banking;
  • PSD2/SCA – implementation of best practices, data & insights on current EMV 3DS performance;
  • Buy now pay later (BNPL), Variable recurring payments (VRPs) & Request to pay (RTP);
  • digital currencies and cryptocurrencies – benefits and perks of accepting cryptocurrencies;
  • security and fraud prevention – digital identity, biometrics, cashierless shopping & trust, tokenisation;
  • cross-border: international expansion strategies.

MPE 2022 already counts for over 120 speakers, more than 250 merchants, and 50 exhibitors present at the event.

The Awards Programme remains a popular section that will be held in this year’s event, so attendees have the chance to submit their entries for 11 categories, including Merchant Acquirer of the Year, Best Cross-Border Merchant Solution, and Most Innovative Fraud/ Prevention Solution.

Paris Fintech Forum (Paris, 2022)

The event has four seasonal editions, so details about the Spring 2022 edition are yet to be announced. The complex 2021 edition consisted of over 300 key speakers and insights on the trendiest topics in finance and fintech, including Open Banking, women in finance, and sustainable finances.
This year’s edition will tackle similar topics, with PSD2 being one of the most talked-about subjects in the field. Those who want to participate at the event can register on the official forum website.

Notable speakers from Amazon, Etoro, Banque de France, PPRO, Accel, and Microsoft were among the 2021 attendees, so we’re expecting the 2022 edition to be equally booked with high professionals from the payments, ecommerce, and e-trading markets.

MRC Vegas (Las Vegas, NA, 7-10 March)

The MCR Vegas is back with its 2022 March edition and is credited as a leading conference for payments and fraud prevention for industry professionals. This year’s edition will focus on some of the most important payments and fraud prevention topics, with a series of workshops and focus groups held by globally known industry names like Mastercard, Callsign, Ethoca, Adyen, and Riskified. Among others, the topics included in the 2022 edition are:

  • how the latest EMV® 3-D Secure Specifications can help merchants fight card-not-present fraud;
  • risks in accepting cryptocurrency or Buy Now, Pay Later;
  • how can open banking help bolster your fraud defences and improve risk decisions;
  • a new fraud prevention paradigm: Attack Incentive Index;
  • the rise of the metaverse and what it means for digital identity

The in-person event from March represents a good opportunity for industry players to enrich their knowledge by receiving expert insights and expanding their networking.

MRC Berlin (Berlin, 23-25 May)

A similar edition to the one from Vegas will be held in Germany’s capital, Berlin, in May 2022. There is no additional information about the event or key speakers so far, but the MRC website is constantly updated to present the latest details about each event.

Meanwhile, those who are interested in knowing more about the event can check out last year’s notes on the MRC Virtual event.

MoneyLive Summit (London, 28-29 March)

The event addresses professionals in the banking and payments sectors and booked a series of key speakers for its 2022 edition, including the CEOs and COOs.

This year’s edition will focus on:

  • Future of banking – interviews with online bank Revolut’s CEO, fintech innovation, trust, and transparency, supporting customers;
  • Embedded finance ecosystems;
  • Payment innovations – BNPL, invisible payments, QR codes, POS innovation, one-time cards;
  • Digital wallet innovation – e-wallets, PFM, ecommerce, instant credit;
  • Banking operations – fraud and financial crime, customer identification.

The event will welcome decision-makers from the banking and payments sector and promises networking, interview sessions, case studies, and panel discussions.

A list with all the key speakers and detailed event agenda is available on the event’s website.

Money 20/20 Europe (Amsterdam, 7-9 June )

The 2021 event was one of the few to be held in a live format and gathered, in total, over 4,000 people from 1,900+ global companies. The 11th edition of the event in Europe will be held in 2022 in the same live format and, although we don’t have a schedule yet, we will keep you updated with key speakers and attendees as they are made public.

The event’s website displayed the most important moments of the live 2021 edition from both Europe and the US, so those interested can check the fully detailed statistics of the meeting. The attendee market is almost equally split between the banking, fintech, and payments sectors, and we’re expecting the 2022 edition to be similar in terms of content, networking, workshops, and knowledge acquisition seminars.

Last year’s edition gathered CEOs, CIOs, and decision-makers from globally known banks and companies like Santander Group, Société Générale, BBVA, Deutsche Bank, Western Union, Lydia, Checkout.com, Trustly, LVMH, Barclays, JP Morgan, Mastercard, and Visa, among others.

Shoptalk Europe (London, 6-8 June 2022)

The Shoptalk Europe 2022 programme will discuss the latest technologies, trends, and business models in the ecommerce industry, including the way customers prefer to shop and pay. Some of the most important topics of the event include:

  • The future of grocery and FMCG;
  • Post-pandemic shopping experience;
  • Global retail experiences & innovations;
  • Newest digital experiences;
  • Emerging retail technologies;
  • New approaches for sustainability in retail;
  • Using data effectively.

The agenda of key speakers is impressive, including decision-makers from fields as diverse as technology, apparel, grocery, and beauty.

Attendees will enjoy a schedule full of workshops, meetings, and conferences divided into five tracks, including one for emerging technology startups.

The meeting’s audience consists of over 2,500 professionals from retailers, brands, investors, fintechs, startups, and analysts, as well as over 250 tech companies and solution providers.

And many more?

While we are still expecting some virtual events to be held in the first half of the year, the general evolution of the current pandemic will dictate how many of the already programmed events will be held live and in-person. As the 2022 events agenda fills itself with exciting new learning and networking opportunities, we will update, in our dedicated section, the most important conferences and meetings to attend in the payments industry.
