Vipps launches an alternative solution to Apple Pay in Norway

Tap with Vipps will work on all card terminals that accept BankAxept cards, which corresponds to almost all card terminals in Norway.

Apple provides its tap-and-go tech system to third parties

In July 2024, the European Commission announced its plans to approve Apple’s allegiance to provide its tap-and-go tech mobile payments system to third parties. Following the news from April 2024, when Apple made public its offer to open up a tap-and-go tech mobile payments system, the European Commission now accepted the firm’s commitments over how it runs Apple Pay.

Details on Vipps MobilePay

The agreement between the EU and Apple ensures that other mobile wallets like Vipps gain access to the iPhone. This means that, for the first time, consumers can choose which payment solution they want to use on their iPhone. However, Vipps is also available on Android and it will be possible to set it as the default payment app on both iPhone and Android, so users won’t have to open the app to pay.

Clients can use Vipps for all types of online and offline payments to pay in stores, pay organisations and associations, settle payments, send money requests and gifts, raise money for private purposes, and join customer clubs.

Vipps is committed to further improving its payment app, adding international cards and collaborating with more banks. Customers of SpareBank 1, DNB, and over 40 other Norwegian banks will be the first who can tap with Vipps. This corresponds to around 70% of all Norwegian bank customers.

Vipps projects that in a few months, before summer 2025, the service will also be available for Visa and Mastercard cards, making it possible to tap to pay with Vipps worldwide.

Vipps MobilePay plans to launch the tap-to-pay solution in Denmark, Finland and Sweden in 2025.
