In contrast to Lidl Pay in Spain and Poland, where a credit card is used for bills, the German version will debit from customer’s current accounts via SEPA direct debit. The payment service provider is Lidl Digital Trading GmbH & Co. KG. Lidl Plus app users using the regular app store version can now pay with a smartphone. Previously this was only available in an in-house test edition.
Lidl Pay users must confirm the payment at the checkout, via a QR code that the customer scans with their mobile phone. For the technical implementation, Lidl Germany is working closely with the digital division of the Schwarz discounter. Customers without a purchase history can not exceed a EUR 50 limit when paying by direct debit for the first time. However, once the first debit has been made, the limit is raised. In addition to using users’ purchase history, Lidl also makes use of a risk assessment by a data service provider. The payment function of the loyalty app has already been activated in a test branch in the Heilbronn area. However, the function will only be advertised when it is available throughout Germany in April 2021.
