Wincor Nixdorfs adds Anti-Skimming Module

Monday 20 September 2004 21:22 CET | News

Wincor Nixdorf is now supplying a security module offering effective protection against fraudulent manipulation of ATMs.

The so-called anti-skimming module is installed in the machine and uses special sensors to check the entire card slot area for any devices which may have been attached subsequently. Where any suspicion arises the machine is shut down immediately. Skimming attacks have gathered pace in recent years and are being perpetrated by high-tech thieves operating internationally. ATMs are being manipulated more and more often nowadays through the use of devices attached to their card slots, capturing – in effect stealing – important personal data. The customer rarely notices the modification to the machine and is able to withdraw his or her cash from the machine without noticing that the pre-reader has copied the data held on their card. The customer’s PIN is spied out by a miniature camera mounted discreetly on the keypad area. Wincor Nixdorf is helping in the fight against fraud with its anti-skimming module. The module is imperceptible from outside the machine. If an attached device is detected, the ATM is shut down right away before a customer can insert his or her card which could then be copied.
