Wincor Nixdorf pilots self-checkout solutions with leading European retailers

Wincor Nixdorf is introducing a self-checkout solution being piloted by two leading European retailers. Both the hardware and the software used by the system are in-house Wincor Nixdorf developments geared to the European market.

These self-service systems are making something of a breakthrough especially in Germany and the UK, and there are well over 20,000 self-service checkouts already installed in the USA. The customer uses the Beetle/iScan to scan and pay for his or her own goods before leaving the store. For the customer, this means less waiting in line and full control of the checkout process from start to finish. In designing the Beetle iSCAN, only tried and trusted POS and self-service components were used. The Java-based software architecture enables easy integration with existing POS applications. Special attention was given to optimizing the high-storage-capacity payment modules for notes (bills) and coins. Combined with a coin recycler which takes paid-in coinage and uses it for paying out again as change, cash handling costs can be kept to a minimum. Another key differentiator of the Wincor Nixdorf solution, setting it apart from the competition, is its modularity enabling solutions to be tailored to the needs of the customer. This means that there is an optimum configuration available for each segment of the market. From Scan & Bag and Scan & Pass (conveyor belt) solutions to Trolley-to-Trolley solutions, the Beetle/iSCAN is adaptable and guarantees that specific customer requirements can be met successfully.
