US-based tax technology provider Vertex has entered a collaboration with Canada-based commerce platform Shopify to automate tax calculation and compliance for merchants.

Through this partnership, enterprise merchants leveraging the Shopify Tax Platform for business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) sales can automate tax calculation and compliance on a global scale. The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution aims to eliminate challenges to commerce growth and accelerate the transaction process by removing manual updates on complex rates and rules for over 195 countries, including seller’s use tax, goods and services tax, and value-added tax.

Vertex – Shopify partnership objective

Considering that it is one of the first global tax technology partners to join the Shopify Tax Partner Platform, Vertex provides growing businesses with a single, unified global solution to simplify the complexities of cross-border indirect tax. According to Vertex’s officials, the company’s objective is to help organisations in improving their business operations to deliver a unified commerce experience. By integrating Vertex's solutions, enterprise retailers using Shopify can ensure that tax is applied accurately and consistently no matter how their customers transact.

Moreover, Vertex’s collaboration with Shopify follows the commerce platform’s continuous journey of expanding its product capabilities in the enterprise market. Representatives from Shopify stated that, by introducing Vertex as a Shopify Tax Platform Partner, the company addresses the complexities of selling across multiple global tax jurisdictions and in niche categories with a solution that has the flexibility to grow with enterprise businesses. The two companies intend to extend the value they bring to enterprise retailers by enabling companies to transact, comply, and scale easily.

The integration with Shopify also allows Vertex to constantly update tax rules and rates while also automating the tax aspects of the purchasing process, including customer exemptions, merchants can reduce errors and accelerate the transaction process.

Shopify’s recent partnerships and developments

As a commerce company, Shopify provides internet infrastructure for enterprises and tools to open, scale, market, and run retail businesses of any size. The company offers a platform and services that were developed for customisation, reliability, and security, while also providing an improved shopping experience for consumers online and in-store. Currently, Shopify’s services are used by businesses in 175 countries, including brands such as Mattel, Gymshark, Heinz, Netflix, Kylie Cosmetics, SKIMS, and Supreme, among others.

At the end of August 2023, Solana Pay, an open-source payments protocol, integrated with Shopify, making its services available to millions of businesses. The partnership provides merchants with a new payment choice, whilst offering customers the option to pay for goods and services using digital dollar currencies.

A month prior, Shopify announced the launch of Shopify Credit, a business credit card developed for the platform’s merchants. The Shopify credit was designed to reward merchants by providing cash back on their Shopify billing and marketing expenses. Moreover, the credit card can be used as a day-to-day card for business costs, reportedly being accepted everywhere Visa is.

Moreover, in June 2023, ZaloPay partnered with Shopify to open a payment gateway and participate in the platform’s payment system. Through this collaboration, the two companies intended to promote the Brand.com website model in Vietnam to assist businesses with keeping up with the trends of ecommerce.
