VeriFone Leads Charge for Contactless Payment

Wednesday 27 October 2004 09:06 CET | News

VeriFone has received certification of its contactless reader module for the Omni 7000MPD family of modular payment devices by MasterCard PayPass and ExpressPay from American Express. The devices are now being deployed to customer sites.

Major payment industry brands have all standardized on radio-frequency technology under the ISO 14443 standard, to make payment transactions quicker and more convenient, and the first widespread issuance of contactless enabled credit cards is expected early in 2005. The VeriFone contactless reader module can be purchased with the Omni 7000MPD and Omni 7100MPD terminals, or added to the base model units in the field at a later date. With the field upgradeable design of the Omni 7000MPD family of terminals, different modules can be added at anytime to expand the base capabilities with Ethernet and USB, signature capture, and now contactless. VeriFone Omni 7000MPD family terminals using any of these modules can co-exist in the same stores with terminals with other modules, giving merchants flexibility to meet their varying payment needs at the customer service desk, or in the checkout lanes. Building upon the success of the EverestPlus, the Omni 7000 and Omni 7100 are ideal solutions for Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) who want to add all types of consumer activated payments. As many QSR operators have already learned, consumer activated transactions can shave several seconds off of the payments process and they reduce potential employee fraud by keeping the card in the customers hand at all times. By deploying the Omni 7000 or Omni 7100, QSRs also gain the flexibility to support PIN-based debit programs and new payment types such as gift cards, while giving the customers even more control over the transaction and freeing the clerk to prepare the food order. The Omni 7000 and Omni 7100 can be integrated directly into Electronic Cash Registers or standalone terminals such as the Omni 3740 and Omni 3750. The innovative Omni 7100MPD, introduced earlier this year, features a backlit 1/4 VGA touch screen that enables retailers to effectively communicate with their customers by supporting the use of scrolling line items, disclosure statements, company logos, and even animations. The Omni 7100MPD is 100% compatible with the contactless module being deployed with the Omni 7000MPD today.
