Symbol has introduced a new Web-enabled, micro kiosk designed to help retailers increase customer satisfaction by enhancing the shopping experience and to reduce store operation costs by giving employees real-time access to information.

The MK 1100 Micro Kiosk is an interactive self-service kiosk that can be cost effectively deployed to handle both customer and employee applications. The kiosk system can drive incremental sales at the point-of-decision. Consumers can verify product pricing, view digital advertising and promotions, automate orders, locate products, and access frequent shopper information. Retailers can also use the new micro kiosk to deploy store operation applications that increase staff productivity. Employees have in-aisle access to product data and can enter over-stock or under-stock alerts, obtain SKU details, clock-in and clock-out and view work schedules. The new Symbol micro kiosk features a software development kit (SDK) that empowers retail information technology (IT) teams to create valuable applications using Symbols software development environment powered by the Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.1 operating system. The SDK includes a fully functional HTML-based demo application with source code. The MK 1100 supports many programming languages, including, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic.NET, and Browser. The MK 1100 supports serial printing in all these languages. The MK 1100, which features a 5.7-inch (diagonal) color display (1/4 VGA) with optional touch screen capability, connects to store networks through Ethernet or Wi-Fi communications. Designed to minimize total cost of ownership, the MK 1100 supports Symbol AirBEAM Smart to wirelessly refresh software running on the device. The system also supports simple network management protocol (SNMP) so it can be centrally monitored as a client on the network. The kiosk features high performance Symbol 1-D and 2-D data capture capabilities.
