Sasai Money Transfer has announced the expansion of its free remittances offer to additional African markets, in partnership with Airtel Money

Following this announcement, the `Zero Fees` initiative, which was first launched in May 2024 by Sasai Money Transfer in collaboration with Econet in Zimbabwe, is now expected to be launched with Airtel Money, starting with Uganda. The service is set to be expanded to other high-traffic remittance Airtel markets as well, including Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia.

In addition, both financial institutions are set to continue to focus on meeting the needs, preferences, and demands of clients and customers in an ever-evolving market, while also prioritising the process of remaining compliant with the regulatory requirements and laws of the local industry.

More insights on the partnership

Throughout this announcement, the strategic deal with Airtel Money Uganda will ensure that the recipient also enjoys similar benefits by cashing out their funds for free from their Airtel Money wallet. With this in mind, Sasai Money Transfer and Airtel Money expect that the initiative will turn out as an end-to-end and secure customer proposition offering that will provide benefits of optimised access and affordability to both the sender and receiver alike. At the same time, the capability will eliminate remittance sending fees for users and customers of the Sasai Money Transfer solution in the UK and South Africa, who send money to family, friends, loved ones, and acquaintances in the region of Uganda.

In line with the vision of a digitally connected future that leaves no African customer behind, Sasai is expected to lead the charge of digitalising and formalising remittances, as well as making the solutions more accessible and affordable for all clients. The goal is also to close the gap between formal and informal money transfers, as well as to make sure that no one is excluded from the essential tools.

At the same time, Sasai Money Transfers' fore-running collaboration on zero fees with Econet’s EcoCash, a Zimbabwe mobile money operator, has proven to be successful. The zero fees have also become very popular with senders in the UK and SA, delivering relief from the often-exorbitant remittance fees that were seen in the market. As a result, the overall initiative is expected to optimise the experiences of customers, while also accelerating the overall development of the landscape.
