Phishing scams have become one of the biggest threats to Internet users. These consist of using false email messages, pop-ups and websites to steal personal financial data, such as account numbers, passwords or PINs, etc. Phishing is a problem that is growing rapidly. According to APWG data, these kinds of attacks increased by 180 percent between April and May 2004, demonstrating that more cyber-crooks are turning to this kind of bait to commit fraud online. Phishing frauds are getting more and more common and it would not be an exaggeration to say that they are one of the main threats faced by users when they browse the Internet or use email. In fact, the consequences of falling victim to one of these scams are disastrous, as they affect both personal and corporate finances. Panda Software, true to its commitment to protect all users against all kinds of Internet threats, has decided to join this working group, as we see a joint effort from the main representatives of the industry as the most effective way to combat phishing, explains Luis Corrons, Head of PandaLabs at Panda Software. About the Anti-Phishing Working Group The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) is focused on eliminating the problem of phishing and email spoofing attacks, by developing and sharing information about the problem, and promoting the visibility and adoption of industry solutions. Membership of the group is open to qualified financial institutions, corporations, law enforcement agencies, public policy groups and solution vendors. The website of the Anti-Phishing Working Group is www.antiphishing.org. It serves as a public and industry resource for information about the problem of phishing and email fraud, including identification and promotion of pragmatic technical solutions that can provide immediate protection and benefits against phishing attacks.
