Netherlands Selects BioDentity Border Clearance Technology

Saturday 5 June 2004 00:06 CET | News

The Personal Records and Travel Documents Agency of the Netherlands Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations has chosen BioDentity to participate in their trial of a new biometric empowered Dutch Passport.

Just over a year ago, the 188 member countries of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) adopted the face biometric as the globally interoperable method of machine assisted identity confirmation for Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTDs) such as Passports, visas and Official Documents of Identity; and endorsed optional use of a second biometric to be deployed where appropriate at the discretion of the issuing country. The Netherlands is moving forward with a program to evaluate the impact of introducing biometrics in support of its Passport. Prototype Passports produced for this trial will be tested, using technology from the industry leading suppliers, to confirm whether the Passport using the globally interoperable biometric (face) supported by a second biometric (fingerprint), enhances the security of the Passport to look-a-like fraud and meets potential requirements for European border inspection. Up to 15,000 Dutch citizens are scheduled to take part in the trial; with issuance of a prototype Passport to take place at six municipalities. Face and fingerprint biometrics from each citizen volunteering to participate in the trial will be securely recorded within a computer chip integrated within the prototype ICAO compliant Dutch Passport. BioDentity will provide both kiosk and counter inspection versions of its SecurIDent border clearance technology for the trial. Each version will be equipped with dual biometric (face and fingerprint) authentication. The trial will allow the Dutch citizen to experience the new generation of border clearance; one combining the reading of the new form of MRTD containing a Contactless RF Chip and enhanced identity (biometric) confirmation using machine assistance. The SecurIDent Border Clearance Kiosk and Counter Inspection Systems utilize state-of-the-art facial biometric capture and processing technology; and border clearance technology all developed by BioDentity. Leading edge products offered by Sdu Identification (Passport and Contactless RF Chip reader, and supporting software), Bioscrypt (finger print matching technology) and NEC (finger print matching technology) will be integrated into the BioDentity SecurIDent Kiosk and Counter Inspection Systems. This combination of technologies is representative of the newest generation of border clearance systems that will be deployed in support of travel document and rightful holder inspection at frontier controls around the world.
