Scott R. Silverman receives the ID Spotlight Award, assigned to the person who has attracted the greatest attention from the media and general public for his revolutionary ideas on the possible applications of auto ID technology. Scott R. Silverman is Chairman of the company that markets VeriChip, the worlds first implantable radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip for human use, which on October 13, 2004 was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical uses in the United States. VeriChip is a subdermal RFID device about the size of a grain of rice that can be used in a variety of security, financial, emergency identification and other applications. One application of the VeriChip is the Health Microtransponder System that consists of an implantable RFID microtransponder, an inserter, a proprietary hand-held scanner which links to a secure database containing patient-approved healthcare information.
