Arcot to Support Pharmaceutical Industrys SAFE Initiative

Sunday 20 June 2004 15:41 CET | News

Arcot Systems is supporting the Pharmaceutical Industrys Secure Access For Everyone (SAFE) initiative and its cooperation with a group of leading technology firms and banks to create an integrated technology prototype in support of this initiative. Spearheaded by major bio-pharmaceutical companies, the SAFE initiative addresses the industry’s growing challenge of securely sharing documents produced for regulators worldwide to gain approvals on new drugs and medical devices. The approval process sometimes requires bio-pharmaceutical companies to collaborate on joint regulatory submission, as well as working closely with the regulators – all of which demand industry-wide standards for document signing and exchange. By establishing a digital identity standard for the Pharmaceutical Industry, SAFE will create a common, trusted infrastructure between companies, partners and regulators, allowing documents to meet the most stringent requirements of authentication, integrity, liability, privacy and legal enforceability as defined in 21 CFR Part 11. Among the first companies to contribute technology for the SAFE prototype system, Arcot provides to each user a digital identity plug-in that performs all the digital signature creation and validation as well as document encryption functions whether the user’s credentials are issued in software or hardware – all with an easy-to-use graphical interface. The end-user’s credentials can be protected by an ArcotID software smart card, deployable on a USB token or electronically to the end-user’s computer for maximum flexibility, or a hardware smart card. Other companies involved in the prototype include Kyberpass, a provider of a server-side trust integration platform; and Open Text, providing integrated identity assurance, role-based access, XML forms, workflow and digital signatures as part of the company’s Livelink software suite. Also participating are leading banks including Wells Fargo, which provides issuance and validation of digital certificates.
