Alcatel-Lucent Ventures launches Tikitag service in India

Thursday 8 January 2009 16:55 CET | News

Alcatel-Lucent Ventures, a subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent, has launched Tikitag, a RFID tag activated online service in India. The Tikitag starter package includes a USB-enabled RFID reader and 10 RFID tags, as well as access to a community website where users can create and share new Tikitag applications.

Tikitag enables consumers and third-party applications developers to connect items to online content or applications. The Tikitag service uses NFC technology, an evolution of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), to enable the launch of online applications by simply touching an NFC device such as mobile phone to an item tagged with an NFC chip. The technology uses transmitters called RFID tags, which can be attached to various objects or papers. The tags contain data which can be scanned by users with NFC-enabled phones to offer them access to a specific web page.
