Fiserv facilitates SNAP online EBT payment acceptance for grocers

Wednesday 6 May 2020 14:31 CET | News

Fintech Fiserv has announced it is facilitating the acceptance of online EBT payments in support of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) SNAP.

According to the press release, the demand for online ordering to facilitate curbside pickup or delivery service has grown as Americans abide by social distancing guidelines and businesses work to serve customers with limited face-to-face interaction. Shopping in-store and paying for goods in-person is often the only way to purchase groceries, for the 37 million Americans who rely on SNAP.

Moreover, all EBT transactions, in-person or online, require the use of the cardholder’s PIN to authenticate the transaction. As a result, Fiserv created a digital PINpad within their ecommerce environment that allows EBT cardholders to verify their transaction.

However, grocers have to meet specific FNS requirements to participate in the pilot. Once approved by FNS (Food and Nutrition Service), they can work with Fiserv to implement the online PIN solution.
