Ebay suspends direct debit payments in Germany due to possible fraud

Wednesday 24 November 2021 12:12 CET | News

Internet trading platform Ebay and payment service provider Ratepay have announced disabling the possibility to pay by direct debit in Germany.

It is currently being investigated whether fraudsters triggered or attempted to trigger payments from the accounts of affected customers through identity theft. Ebay announced that the Ratepay direct debit scheme had not been offered as a payment option since the end of October 2021, as the company was informed of a number of unauthorised purchases and requests for payment that were made via Ratepay direct debit on Ebay.

According to an Ebay representative, the company is working with Ratepay to solve these problems, yet in the meantime, the Ratepay direct debit is temporarily no longer offered as a payment option. Ebay users can currently pay via the online payment service PayPal, credit card, certain debit cards, the payment services Apple Pay with iPhone and iPad and Google Pay as well as via Sofortüberweisung from Klarna.
