Netherlands: Rabobank to launch a commercial m-payment service

Rabobank, a Netherlands-based financial institution, has teamed up with Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), a Germany-based provider of banknote and securities printing, smart cards, and cash handling systems, to launch a commercial mobile payment solution.

The cooperation between Rabobank and G&D will enable customers to have contactless payment products available in smartphones that support Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The launch of the mobile payment solution is targeted in the Netherlands for 2014.

Rabobank customers can apply for the mobile payment cards online and will receive their mobile payment card directly to their smartphone, through an integrated service infrastructure between Rabobank and G&D. G&D is supplying Rabobank with its Trusted Service Manager (TSM) solution as a managed service, which enables the provision of payment card information to consumers smartphones Over-the-Air (OTA).

In recent news, Dutch financial institutions ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank in collaboration with the city of Leiden, MasterCard and mobile network operator KPN are set to begin a three-month trial of NFC mobile payments which is set to encompass 1,000 consumers and 150 businesses.
