Passengers will be able to use a QR code ticket on their mobile phone to take MTR train rides starting 23 January 2021.
The QR code payment service will be available at all 93 MTR stations, with 1,000 entry gates set up to accept the new payment method.
AlipayHK will operate the system exclusively in the first year of operation.
Passengers can travel with a QR code after binding their AlipayHK e-wallet to the MTR Mobile app. Users can select the ticket type and generate the QR code on their phone. Users will then be able to scan the code at the turnstile. The code will be valid for a single journey. A mobile notification showing the trip's fare will pop up upon exiting the gate. Users can also view their journeys in the past three months in the mobile app.
In the first two months after the service’s launch, passengers traveling with the QR code will receive a 20% rebate for each trip.
