Ireland-based payment platform Stripe has released a study of commercial websites in Europe and uncovered errors in the payment processes.

The study found that the majority of websites (94%) in Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom had 5 or more errors on their checkout pages. In Germany, as many as 97% of leading online shops make at least five mistakes, creating complications in the customer experience and aborting purchases in the payment process. For 66% of retailers, the purchase process takes more than three minutes. In Germany, 25% of all consumers abandon a purchase if the payment process takes more than a minute.

According to a Stripe representative, errors in the checkout can lead to losses in sales and even the largest ecommerce companies have difficulties perfecting their payment processes. For 92% it was not possible to save payment data for future use. Here, too, the German checkouts performed worse than the European average (75%). In 31% of the payment processes there was no possibility for customers to complete the payment process as a guest. 91% of the pages did not allow creating an account through a social media profile.

The three biggest mistakes in mobile optimisation for payment processes were firstly that 96% of the payment transactions analysed in Germany did not support Apple Pay. Even across Europe, 89% did not offer this payment option. Secondly, 97% offered no support for Google Pay, in Europe it was an average of 85%. Lastly, 43% did not offer a numeric keypad when entering card data on a mobile device, whereas in all of Europe it was 20%.
