Accordingly, the German-speaking ecommerce markets are generating more sales than any other language area in Europe. Besides, in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the average order per capita was around 1,000 euros a year, significantly more than in France, for instance, but still considerable less than in the UK. In terms of percentage, 2020'a growth of the ecommerce market was strongest in Switzerland, with an increase of 27.9% compared to the situation in 2019. This DACH country is followed by Austria (+17.4%) and Germany (+14.6%).
The ecommerce share in retail continues to rise steadily in all three markets. These results were concluded by the ecommerce associations from Germany, Austria, and Swizterland, which compared the national figures to shine a new light on ecommerce in the DACH region, Ecommerce News Europe reported.
Furthermore, in 2020, Switzerland-based consumers bought goods with a total value of EUR 11.84 billion, while ecommerce in Austria was worth more than EUR 8.5 billion. A worth mentioning statistic from this country is that the online turnover generated through mobile devices has increased by more than 50%. In Germany, online sales were worth EUR 83.3 billion in 2020.
Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a boost of online grocery shopping. Accordingly, in Switzerland EUR 1.5 billion was generated through online sales of groceries, while in Germany this industry was worth EUR 2.3 billion, and in Austria just EUR 63 million. Per capita, EUR 33 were spent online on groceries in Germany, while in the other two DACH countries, the average expenditure was much higher – EUR 175 in Switzerland, and EUR 78 in Austria.
Another interesting finding from the comparison study is that large online pure players in Switzerland continued to achieve growth rates of up to 50%, while in Germany, almost every second EUR spent in 2020 was made on online marketplaces and platforms.
