Frances Finance Minister calls for EU rules on virtual currencies

Friday 13 September 2019 08:50 CET | News

France’s Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire has said the European Union should introduce a common set of rules to govern virtual currencies, which are now mostly regulated at national level.

Arriving at a meeting of EU finance ministers in Helsinki, Le Maire called for ‘a common framework’ on digital currencies for the 28 EU countries. The request came in the light of his opposition to the development of Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency in the EU.

According to Reuters, he also urged the creation of a European ‘public digital currency’, without giving more details.
