Safaricom to launch M-Pesa for kids and a virtual card

Monday 16 May 2022 10:08 CET | News

Kenya-based Safaricom has planned to add M-Pesa Junior card for kids and a virtual M-Pesa card to its product portfolio, in partnership with Visa.

The M-Pesa VISA virtual card will allow customers to do a lot from buying stuff online both locally and internationally, avoiding the need to have a bank account to access debit cards, avoiding transaction charges when toping up debit cards, handling money from one point, and more.

Safaricom has also announced plans for M-Pesa for kids under 18 years. This product is awaiting regulatory approval. The card will be readily useable and functional. Officials stated that kids are increasingly handling smart gadgets and smartphones, and this is a way for them to handle their little finances whether at home or at school.

So instead of giving a kid cash, one can send it to their SIM card, which is registered under a parent’s name. This way parents can not only handle things cash free, but can also plan and see their spend.
