Oberthur & Idealx Launch New Solution for E-Passports

IDEALX and Oberthur Card Systems have joined forces to develop an ICAO MRTD compliant dedicated global issuance solution and key management for chip-enabled passports.

On May 28th, 2003, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) adopted a global, harmonized blueprint for the integration of biometric identification information into passports and other Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTDs). From now on, biometric MRTDs will enhance security and speed of border controls. Oberthur Card Systems ID-OneTM ICAO chip fully complies with latest ICAO requirements and ensures interoperability with the 20 major Radio Frequency smart card readers. IDEALX-ePass is a comprehensive system that secures e-passports. Governments, relying on their CSCA (Country Signer Certificate Authority) periodically deliver digital authorizations to passport issuance companies. In turn, those entities, using their DSCA (Document Signer Certificate Authority) digitally testify the authenticity of the passport they issue. At the border, the immigration officer reads the chip embedded in the passport and comes up with a known DSCA, then to its corresponding CSCA. This chain of trust effectively certifies that the passport is authentic and that an authorized company issued it on behalf of its country of origin. IDEALX-ePass is an off-the-shelf DSCA and CSCA suite that delivers trust and signature for e-passports in a highly secured environment. Oberthur Card Systems provides an API compliant with international standards using its smart card expertise and technology whereas IDEALX provides the infrastructure and client software which enables authentication, electronic signature and storage of personal data on the smart cards. Most countries are currently migrating towards e-passports and this solution has already been selected by a European government and is at the final stage of deployment. For the past 2 years, Oberthur Card Systems and IDEALX have jointly deployed GAIA to enable large deployments of smart card solutions, electronic certificates and signatures providing: - Citizen access to electronic services, e-submission and declarative portals, - Secure logon or authentication for governments and large corporations, - Secure electronic exchange. As a subsidiary of Francois-Charles Oberthur Group, a world leader in the issuance of traditional and chip-enabled passports, Oberthur Card Systems is the only company in the world that can combine secure passport issuance with high-capacity, high security and FIPS-approved contact and contactless microprocessors.
