INSIDE launches PicoRead

PicoRead has been specifically designed to address the needs of OEMs in consumer electronics and equipment where large reader volumes require small footprint at low-cost. Applications benefiting from this innovation range from: access control in hotel and private door locks, logical access via integration in laptops, keyboards…, handheld terminals, and consumer electronic devices such as PDAs, mobile phones… One of PicoRead’s features includes R2R, INSIDE’s Reader-to-reader technology. R2R provides the ability to communicate with any RF 13.56 MHz transponder or reader, regardless of existing standards: ISO 14443 A/B, FeliCa and ISO 15693, enhanced NFC. It combines a universal reader and a universal card emulator in a single device. Built in a PDA, or in a mobile phone, R2R allows the end-user to handcarry both a contactless tag and reader, with an integrated keyboard, screen and all other features available on such consumer electronic devices. For example, a consumer could use his/her handset for reading a tag, storing an electronic coupon, then redeem the coupon at his/her favorite shop, pay and retrieve the electronic ticket, still using the handset. The R2R’s function can also be very useful for the transfer of large amounts of data that cannot normally fit into a traditional contactless tag. For example, a maintenance technician could use the R2R’s function of his portable equipment to communicate remotely with the control panel of an alarm system, to upload blacklists, cryptographic keys, or to retrieve the event log file from the system.
