MasterCard International has reached 23 million smart cards in Asia/Pacific as of June 2004. Of these cards, more than 90% are EMV-compliant smart cards, underscoring MasterCard’s support for widespread smart card adoption and global standards.

The strength of MasterCards position in the market can be attributed to a combination of strong global smart card programs such as OneSMART MasterCard, lower costs of multi-application cards, and the development of new, innovative applications such as MasterCard Open Data Storage, which provides issuers the ability to offer cardholders more control over personal information ensuring greater privacy. MasterCard’s strategy is built upon interoperability, multiple application capability, and product flexibility to enable its customers to design the best programs for their markets and maximize their investments in smart cards. OneSMART MasterCard is a comprehensive, global support program covering every aspect necessary to successfully launch smart cards. With OneSMART MasterCard, all of MasterCard’s global smart card solutions, technical expertise, and marketing support are consolidated under a single banner.
