Under the agreement, shoppers will be able to use their mobile phones to pay at stores in 2014. The Zapp app is designed to work with the type of online banking applications provided by Barclays, NatWest, Nationwide and Lloyds. It is set to work using a code sent to a customer’s smartphone at the till or online checkout. Alternatively customers will be able to scan a code into the handset from a bill in a restaurant or the screen on a modern card machine.
The code will contain all the information needed to complete the transaction, including the price, retailer and complete details of the goods being bought. Once a customer has logged into the mobile banking app on their phone, the transaction can be completed with a tap of the finger.
