The decision to collaborate comes as travel agents that sell bookings directly to consumers face several challenges in how they manage payments to suppliers, including airlines, hoteliers, and other travel service providers. Worldpay and Mastercard now intend to optimise how these supplier payouts are conducted and to develop tailored solutions for travel agents.
The announcement follows a previous alliance forged between Mastercard and Worldpay in March 2024. At that time, the two companies teamed up to improve the transaction experience by assisting merchants in resolving disputes more effectively and with decreased chargebacks. Worldpay aimed to deliver Mastercard’s Ethoca Alerts to its global merchant base, with the solution offering an early warning system preventing disputes from becoming a chargeback and minimising potential financial losses due to fraud.
By utilising the Mastercard Wholesale Program, Worldpay aims to deliver virtual cards to travel agents supporting scale payment efficiency for its clients across the UK and Europe. Also, the company is set to advance innovation, transparency, and flexibility in B2B payments, with it being among the first providers to offer Mastercard’s dynamic product code feature, enabling travel agents and suppliers to agree on mutually beneficial terms.
As part of its collaboration with Mastercard, Worldpay aims to equip travel agents and suppliers with several benefits, including:
Flexibility and convenience delivered through a virtual card offered by Worldpay, facilitating a single method to conduct transactions across multiple currencies;
Transparency between travel agents and their suppliers, as Worldpay provides both insights and reporting when clients make payments with its offering;
Expertise and expansion, with virtual cards coming as an addition to Worldpay’s end-to-end payment proposition for the travel ecosystem.
