Uber Eats has partnered with Turkey-based quick commerce player Getir to launch a new grocery delivery service in the UK.

The collaboration expanded the range of groceries on tap for Uber Eats’ users and aims to cover other markets where the pair operates in Europe. In the upcoming period, the two companies want to expand their services to Germany and the Netherlands.

Uber Eats has partnered with Turkey-based quick commerce player Getir to launch a new grocery delivery service in the UK.

The partnership’s objective

According to officials, the pan-European partnership aims to provide Uber Eats users with seamless access to over 2,000 products, with deliveries expected to be made in minutes. Over the following period, Uber Eats customers will also have the option to shop from Gorillas stores.

In order to maintain speedy delivery times, Getir couriers will fulfil the grocery delivery process rather than Uber’s riders. Uber’s representatives stated that the partnership allows customers to have access to Getir’s selection of everyday essentials and delivery model. Also, Uber Eats aims to enhance its marketplace and ensure more choice and convenience for its customers across European markets.

Getir’s past changes and developments

Getir’s global headcount decreased by 14% in 2022, as detailed by Techcrunch, and, since the beginning of 2023, the company exited a series of markets in Europe, as it was reportedly struggling with costs and funding. At the end of July 2023, the company ended its operations in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, due to finalising its funding round. The withdrawal enabled the company to centre its remaining financial resources on markets with opportunities for profitability and sustainable growth. Also, in June 2023, Getir decided to withdraw its operations from France, the decision being based on the administrative difficulties the home shopping express delivery platform had in the region.

However, at the end of December 2022, Getir
acquired its German rival Gorillas in a deal reported to be valued at USD 1.2 billion. The two companies merged to form a business valued at approximately USD 10 billion, as Getir completed a funding round of USD 768 million in March 2022.

The Turkish startup valued at USD 12 billion in 2022 is now pursuing to expand its business by making its services available via Uber’s platform in a bid to tap a larger user base. The company leverages Gorillas’ network of dark stores to power the grocery delivery partnership with Uber Eats.

Uber Eats’ recent offerings

Uber Eats already provides grocery delivery options in the UK, with the company entering several partnerships to expand its ability to serve users in the region. The company also introduced additional features and technologies into its platform. In September 2023, Uber Eats announced that it accepts more payment options and aims to roll out an AI-powered assistant to help users find deals and explore food options. Sales Aisle, a new dedicated section that showcases promotional offers, is set to roll out either at the end of 2023 or in 2024 and aims to enhance user convenience and experience in the competitive food delivery markets.

Moreover, Uber Eats partnered with Amazon to enable Amazon Echo device owners to use Alexa to track the status of their orders in the US. Introduced in May 2023, the feature unlocks real-time, hands-free order tracking for Echo users throughout the country. Alexa offers its users timely updates on critical points within the delivery process, from the order being prepared to when it is delivered.
