Global money transfer provider MoneyGram has signed an agreement with European retailer Carrefour to add money transfer service agents and facilities to 22 Carrefour hypermarkets throughout Romania.

Under the terms of the deal, MoneyGram’s money transfer services will be made available in Carrefour hypermarkets, allowing Romanian customers to carry out international financial transfers in their shopping locations.

MoneyGram has provided services in Romania for more than 15 years. In June, MoneyGram began offering multi-currency payout, providing customers with the option to select payout in EUR, local currency RON or in USD.

Carrefour hypermarkets are strategically located in Romania, servicing large metropolitan urban areas and reaching an estimated population of over 5 million in these metropolitan areas alone.

Editors notes: . MoneyGram’s expansion on the Romanian market is a strategic move, as in 2008, World Bank statistics ranked Romania in 8th place among the top 10 recipients of migrant remittances among developing countries. With the global remittances market expected to slump in 2009, MoneyGram is definitely stepping up its game.
