In 2009, Dutch online payment service iDEAL has witnessed a growth of 63 percent in the number of transactions to 45 million, as compared to 28 million registered in the previous year, according to bank traffic company Currence.

During the period under review, overall sales via the iDEAL system totalled almost EUR 3.4 billion, up 62 percent year-on-year, while the value of an average payment was EUR 74.69.

IDEAL ranks highest in the top of the most popular online payment systems, with 44 percent of online shoppers preferring this payment method to any other option, the same source indicates, citing ThuisMarktMonitor Blauw research. Acceptgiro comes second (28 percent), followed by credit transfer (9 percent) and credit cards (6 percent). Only 5 percent of respondents mentioned PayPal.

In October 2009, ASN Bank and SNS Regio Bank introduced the Dutch online payment mechanism as a payment option for their customers and Friesland Bank announced its affiliation with iDEAL a month earlier. Now, the number of consumers who can make iDEAL payments has surpassed 12.5 million.
