Ukash warns Irish consumers about fake Garda scam

Thursday 8 August 2013 00:54 CET | News

Voucher-based prepaid payment services provider Ukash has advised Irish computer users to be vigilant for the latest online scam, which demands payment of fines using messages claiming to be from the Garda, Ireland’s National Police Service.

The scam works by displaying a message warning to the users mentioning that they have been illegally downloading content or viewing illegal content online. The user is then told to pay a EUR 150 fine to avoid prosecution and that their computer will be locked until the fine is paid.

In a growing number of cases, computer users have panicked and paid the fine which, according to the Garda, has enabled the scammers to steal a lot of money. The Garda advice to Irish computer users is to be wary and remember that official police forces will never contact people in this way.

To help tackle the threat of ‘ransomware’ and other online scams, Ukash has joined forces with police authorities and anti-malware partners to launch the www.avoidonlinescams.net website. The hub offers internet users up-to-date news, tips and advice on the latest online scams, including links to instructions and software to remove ransomware.
