UK NatWest is the most targeted bank by email fraudsters

UK software security company ClearMyMail reveals the UKs Top 10 most popular company names used by email fraudsters when targeting the personal finance industry. According to ClearMyMail, subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) NatWest bank was most the most targeted by email phishing attacks.

In December 2007, ClearMyMail customers received an average of 18 fake NatWest emails, 12 fake Citibank emails, 5 fake HSBC emails, 3 fake Abbey emails and 2 fake Lloyds TSB emails. NatWest accounted 41 percent of all phishing emails blocked by ClearMyMail, followed by Citbank with 27 percent, HSBC with 11 percent, Abbey with 6 percent, Lloyds TSB with 4 percent, Pay Pal 2 with 2 percent, RBS with 1 percent, Nationwide Building Society 1 percent, Halifax 0.08 percent and MBNA 0.5 percent.„Phishing emails are very well constructed and often look exactly like a legitimate message from the bank”, says ClearMyMail’s managing director Dan Field.
