SCM Microsystems Introduces USB Reader for SIM-size Smart Cards

Thursday 29 April 2004 10:53 CET | News

SCM Microsystems has introduced a cost-effective USB reader for SIM-size smart cards called eSIM.

Leveraging SCM Microsystems years of experience in secure access technologies, eSIM is a high-performance reader that can support any PC-based smart card application, particularly those dealing with IT security such as desktop or network logon, single sign-on, digital signature and document or email encryption/decryption. A SIM-sized smart card can be used with eSIM to securely store passwords, encryption keys including public key pairs, digital certificates or other information needed for these applications. The eSIM reader is also consistent with specifications issued by the WLAN Smart Card Consortium. The consortium, of which SCM Microsystems is a member, seeks to replace weak username/password security for wireless LAN “hot spots” security with proven SIM based technology from telecom operators. Under this concept eSIM reader could be used to connect the SIM WLAN security card to portable and other USB equipped personal devices. The technology in eSIM includes an on-board flash feature that provides seamless firmware upgrades in the field, enabling the reader to be upgraded after deployment to take advantage of new smart card technology, new protocols, new applications or other technology innovations as they arrive. SCM offers several customizing options including casing, colors and company logos, for companies who want to have their own brand appear on a reader. eSIM is Chip Card ID (CCID) compliant and certified under Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). It is PC/Smart card compliant, ensuring compatibility with all PCs and their operating and communications software, including Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Server 2003 and CE, as well as MacOS and Linux.
