Nokia expands Telefónica Móvils GSM/EDGE network in Chile

Nokia has signed deal for the expansion of Telefónica Móvil Chiles GSM network nationwide. Deliveries have already begun, and the network expansion is expected to be implemented and operational by early 2005. Under the agreement Nokia will deploy GSM/EDGE radio network equipment, including base stations and base station controllers. In addition Nokia will provide installation and an extensive range of care services provided by the Nokia NetActä operations support system platform, including emergency support, software maintenance, plus training to maintain the competitiveness of the solution. Nokia is the main supplier of Telefónica Móvils GSM/EDGE radio access and GPRS networks. In October 2003, Telefónica Móvil launched Latin Americas first commercial EDGE services in Chile with the Nokia EDGE solution. Telefónica Móvil Chile is managed by Telefónica Móviles, one of the four major mobile telephony consortiums worldwide. In Chile, Telefónica Móvil has two networks with two different technologies, thus providing its 2.5 million subscribers a wide breadth of products and services. This will again consolidate its leading position, particularly now with the new availability of advanced services based on the GSM/GPRS 1900 network.
