12 mobile operators will run contactless mobile payment services trials in Australia, France, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and the U.S., prior to the commercial launches. Moreover, 35 mobile operators representing 1.3 billion customers will be involved in the initiative.

These tests are part of the GSMAs Pay-Buy-Mobile project, aimed to provide a single global approach related to contactless payments via mobile phones. Customers who participate in the trials will be able to use their handsets to pay for goods and services in shops, restaurants and train stations. All phones used in the trials include Inside Contactless MicroRead NFC chip. This technology enables mobile operators to quickly deploy SIM based applications, due to a direct link between the NFC chip and the SIM card, via the standard SWP protocol.
