American Airlines to introduce cashless cabins on selected routes

Thursday 12 February 2009 15:17 CET | News

US airline operator American Airlines is set to initiate the transition to cashless cabins onboard specific flights starting from the summer of 2009.

Thus, onboard American Airlines flights to and from Canada, the company is only to accept payments via credit or debit cards for purchases including headsets, meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages. All major credit and debit card brands are to be accepted. Payments are to be made via hand-held Onboard Sales Recorder devices, which have been used by the company since 2006 in parallel to cash. American Airlines representatives have indicated that the transition to cashless cabins aims to cut back on the time needed to carry out onboard purchases.
