Internet users do not need an online bank account to use BillPay - just a debit card. They can make payments to almost 200 organisations, including councils, utility companies, housing associations and the Inland Revenue. The service is free to billpayers. Registering takes only a few moments and is carried out entirely online. It uses secure, 128-bit encryption technology and, unlike some sites, debit card details are not retained on the BillPay servers. Among the organisations that accept payments this way is the Inland Revenue - making the service particularly useful for anyone who needs to meet next months deadline to pay self-assessment tax. The Inland Revenue has now made making payments online even easier by adding BillPayPLUS to its own website. It uses the same proven technology as BillPay but means users can move seamlessly from www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk to the BillPayPLUS pages to make a payment. BillPay was launched in January 2000 and BillPayPLUS introduced in July 2003.
