Uganda: Airtel, Warid merge mobile money services

Monday 27 May 2013 13:23 CET | News

Bharti Airtels African division Airtel Uganda and Uganda-based telecom operator Warid Telecom have merged their money transfer services.

Consumers in Uganda do not have to go through the process of opening up a bank account; they can do all the basics through their mobile phones including paying utility bills for services like electricity, water and pay taxes.

With the new Airtel-Warid money transfer service, customers can deposit and withdraw money through the Equity bank ATM and their handsets. They do not need a bank account to do that. The Warid subscribers will retain their Warid mobile numbers and their code will not change.
